What Is A School Counselor?
Hello! My name is Christianne Parks and I am the new school counselor at McLouth Elementary. But what exactly is it that I do? As the school counselor, it is my responsibility to take a leadership and advocacy role within my school. With that in mind, some of my roles include:
- Providing counseling support for all students
- Offering peer support and crisis intervention
- Preparing for transitions
- Collaborating with staff, parents, and building/district committees
- Analyzing and using data
- Facilitating, collaborating, and advocating for systemic change
So what should a student see the school counselor for? I am happy to visit with students for a variety of reasons, which could include (but are definitely not limited to):
- Academic Difficulties
- Bullying
- Celebrations
- Changes
- Divorce
- Family Concerns
- Friendship Issues
- Goal Setting
- Problem-Solving
- Sadness, Grief, or Loss
- Self-Esteem
- Worries/Anxiety
- Other
Parents are welcome to call the school or email me at parksc@mclouth.org about any questions or concerns you may have. In addition to the list above, parents can discuss:
- Concerns about their children
- Cyberbullying
- Parenting
- Social Media
- Other
